    Mohd Radzlan bin Jalaluddin, Education Malaysia Global Services’ CEO, was establishing South-East Asia as an international hub for education.

    Students will be affected if you wait. We don’t want this to happen to students, so we encouraged them to enroll at least for the first semester or two semesters [and] to do it online.”


    EMGS, like most other sectors, moved its marketing activities online during a pandemic.

    It hosted webinars with alumni from Malaysian universities and invited academics from Malaysia to present online lectures to potential students. Parents and students viewed this series more than 10 million times from 54 countries.

    EMGS has also launched Discover Education Malaysia’s online platform to allow students to compare and find the many courses and institutions available in Malaysia.

    Mohd Radzlan claims that the site has received more than 160,000 visits since 2021.

    Mohd Radzlan stated, “Since borders were opened, we began to go back to normal engagement through fairs, but online is still going on.”

    Online stays are the future for us. This is the future.

    Malaysia opened its borders to the world in April 2022, and its higher education institutions are now offering in-person education.

    How does Mohd Radzlan now feel that international students have finally returned in person after two difficult years?

    He said, “We are very, extremely happy.” Both the students and the institutions are happy. We haven’t been able to see each other in person for the last few years.

    “Students are excited. Lecturers are excited. The administrative officers are thrilled to welcome the students. Everyone is happy now.

    As international travel resumes, EMGS has set its sights again on 250,000 students.

    Malaysia currently has more than 100,000 international students. Last year, Malaysia received around 40,000 applications from abroad.


    Incoming students from Malaysia have come from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and China over the past decade.

    Mohd Radzlan, however, explains that they don’t target Asian students and aren’t looking at intra-regional mobility. Malaysia’s education sector looks beyond the continent.

    Mohd Radzlan was in London at the time of the interview with his team, where they met alumni from around the world, British universities, and potential partners. This is a clear indication that the company has its sights on the Western market.

    He stated that there are 38 countries to target and not just from Asia.

    According to Mohd Radzlan, the greatest challenge in attracting students is “the perception by the international community that Malaysians are a destination to tourists and a vacation destination.”


    Malaysia wants to be known as more than a vacation destination. Mohd Radzlan stated that his organization had identified eight unique selling points. These include safety (Malaysia ranks at 23 in the Global Peace Index; the USA is at 122), diversity, and infrastructure. And, crucially, affordability, given the global inflation rates.

    Mohd Radzlan stated that while the UK has higher-ranked institutions, Malaysia also has foreign-branch campuses. “Students have many options for good universities with affordable tuition and a low cost of living.

    Malaysian branch universities offer students the opportunity to study for a fraction of the cost of their home campuses.

    Mohd Radzlan says that his greatest accomplishment during his two-year tenure as CEO was bringing together Malaysia’s diverse institutions to improve the country’s education offerings.

    He said, “In the last two years, I was able to get institutions to cooperate with EMGS and work together between the institutions.”

    “We must promote Malaysian institutions as a whole. We have to promote Malaysian higher education and international education as a hub.”
