Jubilant FoodWorks, the franchisee for Domino’s Pizza, will launch the famous fried chicken from the United States brand Popeyes famous for its spicy New Orleans-style fried chiles and chicken sandwiches in India on the 19th of January with the opening of its first restaurant in Bengaluru.
“Popeyes was established in 1972 and is one of the top American as well as fastest growing Chicken brands. Popeyes hopes to please Indian customers with the rich and delicious flavors of its Louisiana-style chicken.” the company said in a report to the stock exchanges.
“The success of the brand lies in its traditional and unique technique of hand breading, battering, and marinating its fresh chicken for 12 hours in bold Cajun seasonings,” the company stated.
Popeyes operates more than 3400 restaurants across 25 countries.
With the addition from Jubilant FoodWorks, the competition is expected to grow in the chicken fried segment that KFC has held the lead across the nation so far.
“KFC has been able to enjoy free-run in the market for fried chicken. There are local competitors in this sector. However, no major QSR company was present until now. In the wake of Popeyes as a rival, and now Jubilant FoodWorks is stepping into this opportunity,” stated Devangshu Dutta, chief executive at the consulting company Third Eyesight.
When it launched its first public offering in 2013, Yum! Brands (which owns KFC) biggest franchise, Devyani International, had stressed its advantage against other QSR franchises across the country.
“We have no competition for KFC in India,” Ravi Kant Jaipuria, chairman of Devyani International, had claimed in the year before announcing the company’s initial public offer (IPO). Devyani International runs 284 KFC India outlets across the 107 cities of India and contributes to more than 50 percent of its revenue. Sapphire Foods, which to has launched its IPO the year before, is another major franchise of KFC within India.
Both companies compete in the pizza market with Jubilant FoodWorks in the pizza segment, as they operate Yum! Brands-owned Pizza Hut in India. However, jubilant FoodWorks with Domino’s Pizza is supremacy in the pizza industry. Consider this: Pizza Hut currently has 500 outlets in India, and 317 are managed through Devyani International; Jubilant FoodWorks, however, already has more than 1,335 stores that are part of Domino’s Pizza in India.
With the recent launch of Popeyes, it is a joyous Fo.” However, it is now that Indians are becoming more adventurous with food and are trying different food options. Fried chicken provides the next avenue to grow QSR businesses,” he added.
“However, now as Indians become more experimental with food and trying out different cuisines, the fried chicken segment offers the next arena for growth to QSR companies,” said the executive.
Westlife Development, which holds the mastTuli, believes that the sector can accommodate some players. “QSR space is poised for over 20 percent growth in the next five-six years, and hence there is enough headroom for multiple players to grow in it,” said the company’s CEO. Added.
“Veg options and no MSG.”
Popeyes India’s menu will feature the Cajun-inspired signature chicken Sandwich and Popeyes signature Chicken with classic and spicy flavors. Its Indian menu will also offer various vegetarian options and will include wraps and rice bowls. The whole India menu does not contain MSG as well as the meat is free of antibiotics added Jubilant FoodWorks.
The launch of the cult Popeyess in India Shyam S. Bhartia chairman as well as Hari S. Bhartia, co-chairman of Jubilant Foodworks Limited, said, “We are excited to present Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen name to the chicken-loving Indian customers. We’re confident of the fact that Popeyes will not just delight guests, but will also be a strategic addition to JFL’s portfolio and strengthen its position as a leader in the QSR sector.”
Popeyes will open their flagship location in Koramangala on the 19th of January and will be followed by shops located in New BEL Road and Kammanahalli shortly afterward. Popeyes will launch its application (Android along with iOS) as well as a mobile-friendly website.
To provide the smoothest and most seamless shipping experience, JFL is building its in-house delivery fleet of electronic bikes to ensure a non-emission delivery. Additionally, employees are fully vaccinated and regularly checked, JFL said.
“Safety procedures like daily temperature monitoring for all employees and regular sanitation of the restaurant are being implemented, as well as frequent sanitation of bikes will be carried out. All delivery drivers are required to wear gloves and face masks and will be following the regular hand washing protocol,” it added.
