Many business owners use a different name than the one they have registered to represent their Business. This is known as “doing business under” or DBA.

You can conduct business under a different name than your Business, and it allows for flexibility to work with many businesses. If you don’t wish to be known as your own Business, a DBA can help you keep your privacy.

You are required to operate as your person under US law if you have a sole proprietorship or general partnership.

If your name is John Smith and you run a body shop, your real name would be John Smith.

You can still operate as a DBA by filing a DBA and avoiding the legal consequences of doing business under an unregistered address.


Why do companies need a DBA?

A company can use a DBA for many reasons. A DBA allows you to conduct business under a different name than your legal one. This is a great option for sole proprietors who want to keep their identities private.

What Businesses Do You Need a DBA for?

A DBA is not required for every Business. It all depends upon factors like the legal status of the company, the requirements of its location, and the preferences of the business owner.

Sole Proprietorships, General Partnerships: To allow your company to operate under a different name from yours or your partner’s, you must file a DBA.

Franchises: Although franchise owners do not need a DBA to operate their business, it is common to file one to establish their local identity. If you buy a McDonald’s franchise, you might have established an LLC or corporation. However, your DBA can be “McDonald’s.”

Other legal entities: Other than general partnerships and sole proprietorships (and other legal entities such as S corporations, C corporation, LLCs, LLCs or limited liability corporations, limited partnerships, etc.), most legal entities (including Scorps, C corporations, LLCs, LLCs, or limited liability companies) are not subject to the DBA name. Technically, you don’t need to file a DBA because they have already registered their entities and business names with the state. This is, however, unless required by the state, county, or city.

Online sales are an integral part of many businesses. Instead of trying to create one all-encompassing website, you can file DBAs for each subset of product/service and segment your online market accordingly.

The best thing about this is that you can have as many assumed names as you like (within reason) under the same umbrella entity. It’s easy to scale up your business with this system.


For example, if your ice cream shop is owned and you want to open a restaurant under the same name, it’s unlikely that the two would work together. You would file a DBA to allow you to have separate businesses with their names.

There is a difference between a DBA (Direct Business Administration) and an LLC

DBA is an acronym that indicates an LLC, general partnership, or sole proprietorship operates under an assumed or fictional name.

This filing does not create a separate entity. An LLC, however, does. An LLC provides additional legal protections than a DBA, such as the ability to remove personal assets from your business liabilities.

But, it is more expensive to form an LLC than to register a “doing company as” name. An LLC is more complicated than a DBA, filed in minutes.


How do you file a DBA?

You must comply with the laws of your country or state to file a DBA.

Fill out the paperwork and pay a fee. Approval can take between one to four weeks. After that, you will be able to open the doors to your new business under a different name.

Check with your state government office to see if you must renew your DBA annually.

What a DBA Will Not Do

A DBA can bring many benefits, but it won’t help your business in certain ways.

Protect Legal Rights: DBAs don’t offer additional protection and differ from LLCs.


Grant Naming Rights: Your state may grant you are naming rights to protect your business name.

Serving as a Legal Entity. Your DBA means your Business operates under a different name than you choose. It is not a legal entity.

The New York Times was the first newspaper to publish a report on the purge based on details from three employees who knew about the incident. The employees were not identified.


It’s unclear how many SpaceX employees were fired; however, Shotwell did not conceal the fact that the company thought they had crossed an unacceptable threshold.

“The letter, solicitations, and general process made employees feel uncomfortable, intimidated and bullied, and angry because the letter pressured them to sign onto something that did not reflect their views,” Shotwell wrote in her email, as reported by the Times. “We have too much critical work to accomplish and no need for this kind of overreaching activism.”

The dismissals took place on Thursday. The exact day Musk spoke to Twitter users for the first time regarding the USD44 billion deal that he had signed to bring the social media platform to his empire of business. The agreement is still in doubt as Musk investigates whether Twitter hides the number of fake accounts on its platform.

While the Twitter drama unfolded, there was a report the following day that Musk was able to pay USD250,000 for a female flight attendant to stop a possible sexual harassment suit against Musk. Musk has denied the accusations of sexual harassment, and in the last month, Shotwell sent an email message to SpaceX employees stating that she believed the allegations were false.

In the past few weeks, Musk has also crudely mocked the appearance of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Twitter and posted an emoji with poop during a discussion online in which he was joined by Twitter the CEO Parag Agrawal.


The open letter written by SpaceX employees that criticized Musk said that Musk’s tweets to his followers of 98 million painted SpaceX in a bad image.

“As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX. Every tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company,” the letter reads. “It is essential to communicate to our employees and the potential employees that Elon’s messages do not reflect our mission as a company, our mission, or our beliefs.
